If we use the UN definition of genocide, then yes, it looks to me like Israel is doing that. But hamas is also doing that. So accusing one side but not the other of genocide is dishonest. If you wanted to be honest, you would have to say Israel is doing genocide in response to hamas's genocide. That does sound absurd. But it's because the UN definition does not agree with the common sense meaning of genocide, which is intent to destroy *all*, or at least most, not simply 'part '.

Usually when I think of "genocide" my point of reference is Jewish treatment in ww2 where Germany created an entire industry for the sole purpose of terminating some ethnic groups in the most straightway possible. They didn't wait for some Jewish terror group to shape the worlds opinion so that they could attack them in some multi-step process. They just went straight to it. 

Reading the way you defined it, genocide generally sums up to: 
1. war waging - even horrible stuff like "forcibly transfering children to another group" is so vague that it can basically include the kids being sent away from the war zone and not staying with their relatives for some time. 
2. somewhat angry tweets - because lets be fair, most of the tweets on X are much more extreme than everything you presented. If you take into account the date and the circumstances, these are not even necessarily out of place. 

So either the accusation of genocide is not at all serious, or its application to israel isn't.

Ex British Army officer here. I'm not Jewish, Israeli, Arab, Muslim or Palestinian, but I've spent several years living both in Israel and in the West Bank.

The Israeli-Arab war is likely the most media-driven and propaganda-ridden conflict in human history.

Therefore it's no surprise to me that people throw around accusations such as genocide, massacres, and so on. These are usually intended to dramatize for the sake of political rallying, more than they are a description of reality.

If, say, we fast forward 500 years, and allow a historian to look over conflicts over history, there's no objective reason to believe that the war in Gaza would be considered a "genocide".

From a military point of view, Israel has killed far less civilians, both in sheer numbers and in proportion to combatants, than in any urban conflict we've seen in history. It's pretty clear that Israel goes to lengths beyond those I've seen in my own career at NATO when it comes to preventing civilian casualties, and there is also no doubt that Hamas, the PIJ, and these other terror organizations go to vast lengths to use civilian shields, just like we see with ISIS and the Taliban for example.

When you look at the genocide accusation (both online or at the ICJ), it's mainly based on comments taken out of context of radical Israeli politicians, and not based on anything really happening on the ground. Another part of the accusation was about aid not entering Gaza which turned out not to be real, and we haven't seen any form of famine in Gaza so far. Just an example.

The truth is that this is a very clear cut case of a conflict that is NOT a genocide. The problem is the hatred, fueled by propaganda and media, that absolutely dominates people's perceptions.

1. Is it possible there are other "intent" instead of just "genocidel special intent" ? For example, is it possible that the real intent is not to destroy in whole or in part, a national, etnical, racial or religious group but rather the real intent is to displace the group ? i.e. not to kill them or destroy them, just to merely to move them/ transfer them out. Actually that does count.  The existence of an active conflict that both sides are insisting in participating in generally moves many acts from genocidial to being war crimes or possibly legal.

The biggest counterargument you didn't address is the lack of mass killing. Israel has chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.  They have all manner of cheap artillery.   Were genocide the intent Israel could have genocided the Gazan population in a matter of hours.  They instead objectively used expensive flight and expensive weapons giving them much more precise targeting.  Why would they bother if the intent was just to kill off the civilians?   Why did they spend billions and do substantial additional harm to their economy so as to make themselves less effective in their supposed aim?

Israel isn't just stopping aid. They are forcing everyone else not to send aid. They allegedly bombed aid shipments heading to Gaza.

This isn't about Hamas or gangs stealing aid,[which Israel also deliberately enables](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/11/18/gaza-looting-aid-convoys-israel-famine/). It is about using starvation as a war strategy, a crime against humanity. Never fall into the trappings of blaming Hamas for Israel's starvation campaign

I would take over and fully clear an area in the north and south, wall and fence that area and setup aid distribution at its edges. Then, Gazans can get IDs that they can use to get aid, or enter the safe zone to get food, shelter, medicine, and clean water. If you come into the safe zone you stay there. Over time, we clear the next area fully, setup wall and fence around it, then take down the first wall and fence, opening up the safe zone into a larger area, at which time I'd prolly begin permanent construction for new housing and shops to support people who wanted to stay in Gaza. Speaking of staying or leaving, I would also use this opportunity to begin moving Gazans who wanted to leave Gaza out of Gaza with a financial stipend to get them started in their new home country (it's not ethnic cleansing if it is voluntary).

Is there actually any evidence that Hamas is taking the aid in an organized manner and on a massive scale? I know that there have been reports of armed groups stealing aid but do we know it's going to hamas? People are desperate and doing anything to survive. And there will always be horrible people that take advantage of chaos and crises. 

The fact that Israel wants the distributions sites to be set up south of the corridor should finally sway any skeptics about exactly what Israel's end goal is. 

If Israel isn't responsible for Gazans, then they need to allow other entities to dictate the best and safest way to distribute food in Gaza. If they can't relinquish this control, then people need to stop whining about how "Israel is generously '**giving'** aid to Gaza when they don't have to"

This is why occupation is necessary at this point. Hamas won't feed its own people, it's not a government, it's a parasite. The area needs to be governed, so that civil services can be administered.

Anything is better than the current system as Hamas steals most food and stores it or resells is for a huge profit. Using the profit to buy more weapons to keep attacking Israel. Which keeps all miserable.

The population is very angry right now as the aid is not getting to them so USA, Israel, and NGOs spend billions on something that's completely broken. The aid needs to be given to families as otherwise they will never see it. So somehow you'll need to deliver it. I think this Israel idea is very good. Not perfect, but it could solve like 90% of the current issue.

There are aspects of this war I don't understand. Some of it has to do with how small a military IDF is I guess. Manpower is just more limited than the US military. 

We'd likely have our military administer aid directly. In part just as bait to get the jihadis out in the open when they try to attack distribution hubs.

I dont think this is a really relevant question. Regardless of what Hamas does, blocking aid is a war crime. There IDF's strategic concerns dont make it any less of a warcrime. So "who will blink first" is shifting the blame for this atrocity, when it could be remedied any time by the IDF by upholding their obligations under the relevant conventions and treaties at play here. Good post. I would like to also mention Hamas has also publicly accused Gaza tribal families (who have recently gained power due to Israel weakening Hamas' control) for stealing aid. In fact one of their leaders of the Doghmush clan was recently assassinated by Hamas for crimes of stealing aid.

I think this is the only true war crime Israel is committing right now (people can shove the genocide claims and all that shit up their buts for all I care). The rest of whatever is happening is normal warfare. Starving the population, even if one commenter is rightly indicating that aid distribution is what keeps Hamas in power in the absence of a real economy and non-Hamas affiliated public institutions, is not ok under any circumstances.

So, there is a conceptual misunderstanding of what Israel's objectives are vis-à-vis aid deliveries. I posit that the complete lack of journalistic integrity in the West coupled with the role of the modern journalist as an ideological crusader rather than a purveyor of knowledge is to blame.

To understand what Israel is trying to do, you have understand the theory of what is known as "aid colonialism." A fundamental aspect of this is that by provisioning vast amounts of foreign aid to a society you actually blunt its socioeconomic development. This is logical because if you consider what the economy actually is, it is the flow of goods that enables a society to sustain itself. If a society gets everything it needs shipped in from an external party, then it has no reason to pursue a path of sustainable development. What it does allow is the formation and sustenance of a vast "warrior caste" or military composed of the vast amount of unemployed young men.

Gaza specifically is far beyond the carrying capacity of the territory it inhabits. It could not survive without cooperation with its neighbors. That would be either Egypt, Israel, or by reconciling with the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Nature's way of correcting nonviable societies (such as Hamas) is through famine but this is considered morally objectionable in the modern age. Instead massive quantities of foreign aid are provided and due to the abundance of foreign aid, Hamas can refuse to do any of the above.

Hamas is basically a moss that sits atop the aid distribution network with in the Gaza Strip. In the absence of sociopolitical institutions and anything approaching an economy this is the ultimate power in Gaza. Hamas actually originated as a nonviolent Islamic charity called Mujama al-Islamiya that was partly responsible for distributing/utilizing foreign aid. This was the institution that Israel supported when people say that they financed Hamas. Hamas as a military power has been largely defeated outside of individual sporadic attacks but without developing a solution for where Hamas derives its power, it will simply regrow as soon as Israel withdrawals. 

What Israel is currently trying to do, is to peel Hamas off the aid distribution networks in the Gaza Strip. It is a major challenge because they need to foster independent aid distribution networks that are outside of the control of Hamas. The question of more/less aid is a conundrum because the civilian population of the territory needs to be supported but there is the understanding that excess aid outside of Israel's distribution networks will fall into the hands of Hamas. What we are likely to see in the next phase of the war, is Israel moving north-to-south ousting Hamas (and quite possibly the UN) and establishing alternative aid distribution networks. At the conclusion of the war, this network will be handed off to moderate Palestinian elements and the moderate Arab states. For the record, all of them are in on Israel's plan. The UAE is planning to establish a jetty in Gaza City to directly import aid from Cyprus. Moving aid north-to-south rather than south-to-north (and having it fall into the hands of Hamas) is really essential for precluding the rise of another Hamas.

For the record, Hamas is entirely aware of what is going on. This is why the impasse in the ceasefire negotiations is in regards to returning citizens from the south to the north. Hamas would like to smuggle operatives back from the south to reestablish control in the north which Israel cannot allow. I suspect that we will see more provocations regarding aid; real, alleged, or embellished; as the war drags on.

I feel like going mad when on the other side we have all the independent and neutral observers, aid organisations, envoys from allies like US, on the ground screaming that "Israel is deliberately blocking aid from reaching Gazan civilians", and on the other hand we have Israel alone without any demonstrable proof saying "no actually, it's Hamas stealing all the food and the aid organisations being incompetent". And for some reason, for way too many people that's enough to believe the Israeli version of the story. 

One other quite considerable artificially created bottleneck is that Israel completely closed all other crossings to Gaza but the Rafah crossing at the Egyptian border in 10/7, only opening the Kerem Shalom crossing in later December under international pressure. This is largely (as you said) why the Northern Gaza is facing the worst of the famine, there's zero crossings at the border to the North; all food that does get in overwhelmingly stays in the South, because it's become almost impossible and too dangerous transport anything through the whole Strip. 

Whatever anyone thinks of the war and the nature of the Israeli armed offensive itself, there really is *absolutely no justification* for starving two million civilians. Like, what even could be the argument to justify it as part of some legit stratistical concern - can't let in enough food, or Hamas will make rockets out of bread?

One thing that should also be mentioned (and should be obvious but people glaze over it) is that food shortage is often, if not always, a byproduct of war.

The "humanitarian crisis" has many contributing factors on both sides, no doubt. However the chief contributor is the elected government of Gaza deciding to start a war.
